How to restore disk from smaller image?

Nowadays, hard disks become bigger and bigger. We can keep lots of photos, videos and other valuable data in such kind of mass storage. But the large disk could lead us to store our data too centralized. It increases the risk of our data indirectly.

Once our disk data is destroyed by accident, the prepared image would be the last hope for recovering disk.

PCHD file is the hard disk image file type of PC Disk Tools products. Each PCHD file has a couple of PCPT files which are Partition images of that disk. Comparing to storing data in disk, the disk image is easier to manage and transfer. To know more about how to make a disk image, please click here.

PC Disk Clone X is a professional backup tool with “Volume Compress” and “Volume Expand” technology. It could help us to finish nearly all kinds of missions in backup area. We can recover disk from large image and vice versa.
We can download it here.

Before we recover disk from image, we should finish the preparation jobs below:

  1. Select and confirm the disk image as the source image. The image should be located at another disk. If the original disk size of the image is different from the destination disk, we need to make sure that whether there is enough space for disk to recover data from image.
  2. Back up all the important data and delete all the partitions in the destination disk (This is a required step) before starting the restoration. To know more about how to delete partitions please click here.
  3. If we want to recover a disk image with the Windows Operating System, we should prepare a boot disc to repair the “BCD Error”, so that the destination disk could be bootable after the restoration. To know about how to make a boot disc, please click here. And to know more about how to repair the “BCD Error”, please click here.

After the preparations above, we can restore disk from PCHD by the following steps.

Step 1

Open your PC Disk Clone and click the “Image to Disk” button on the main menu.

Step 2

Find out where the disk image file with the postfix “PCHD” is located and select it. We can see the original disk size of PCHD is 350G.

Step 3

There are some information about disks would be listed at the “Destination Disk” as the diagram below. We can see the No., capacity, type and contained partitions of the disk. It would be useful for us to identify which is our destination disk.

Select the hard disk as the destination disk. We can see the original disk size of disk is 500G which is larger than the image’s. So we are trying to restore disk from a smaller image.

When we select the destination disk, the destination disk couldn’t contain any partition in it. If we haven’t removed all partitions of the destination disk on the preparation job, PC Disk Clone will ask for deleting all the partitions before cloning.

After we remove all partitions on the destination disk, the disk list of PC Disk Clone would show there are no partitions on it.To know about how to remove partitions on disk, please click here.

Notice: Please make sure that we select the right disk to remove its partitions. Because once we delete partitions of destination disk, the disk data won’t be recoverable any more.

Step 4

Click “Start” to recover image to disk.

Step 5

After we click the “Start” button, PC Disk Clone X will clone data from image to disk in high speed. When the progress reaches 100%, the restoration should be finished. You can find the destination disk contain the same data as the image.
